The process of direction includes following steps: 

(not necessary in this particular order)

1. information search and analysis

2. understanding key points of interests

3. key idea formulation

4. work with/on storyboards and scenarios

5. task formulation for 3d, 2d artists and other contractors

6. details elaboration

7. final draft tests editing

8. search/work with music, sound, additional graphics 

9. final editing process

the duration of the project depends on task formulation and rarely it is less than 2 weeks, more often a month and more. All the deadlines set by first 3 points of process's steps.
